NEWS International’s nemesis, Tom Watson declares: “There’s only one Sunday Sun you can trust”.

The Labour MP has been a leading critic of Rupert Murdoch’s media empire in the phone-hacking scandal.

But last night he urged North readers to stay loyal.

He was on the panel which grilled News International chairman James Murdoch and his father during a parliamentary select committee hearing.

Since he has become a champion of the “honest and accurate” regional press and a fierce critic of unethical practices exposed on some Fleet Street titles.

He said: “The Sunday Sun based in Newcastle is a highly regarded regional newspaper. It’s a great paper. The one thing about regional newspapers is that they are trusted and they are authentic. They reach their communities in a way that national newspapers don’t.

“The Sunday Sun has an excellent brand, unlike its new national rival and I just hope readers don’t get confused between the two.

“The Sunday Sun and all local papers have a record of seeking out the truth. They stand up for their communities. Market research has shown that local papers have suffered slightly because of the actions of the nationals and tabloid excess.

“But what I would say to people is don’t be fooled.”

His comments came at the Labour North Regional Conference in Sunderland yesterday, as the party launched its drive for May’s local elections.

Mr Watson, added: “Frankly it’s outrageous Rupert Murdoch wants to steal the good name of the Sunday Sun.”
