A TORY councillor and licensing committee vice chairman was arrested on suspicion of drink driving after a three car pile-up in a sleepy Midland village.

Peter Whittaker, 59, was later charged with failing to provide a breath test after a Volvo estate allegedly crashed into TWO parked vehicles in Feckenham, near Redditch, Worcesterhire.

Exclusive pictures reveal the twisted wreckage of the motoring carnage in the immediate aftermath of the November 20 smash.

Incredibly, no-one was injured but damage is expected to run into many thousands of pounds.

Mr Whittaker, a conservative councillor for Bromsgrove District Council and vice chairman of its licensing committee, refused to comment yesterday.

He said: “I would rather not say anything to be honest.”

An eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said: “I was in my house at about 10pm when I heard an almighty bang in the road outside. I ran out to see what had happened and came upon a scene of carnage.

“My Toyota Rav4, which must weigh about two tonnes, had been written off and pushed about 20 feet down the road, right into my brother’s Fiat which had been pushed through two brick walls and into a car park.

“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

“I saw the Volvo driver in the front seat of his car and went over to help him out and stayed with him until the police arrived.

“I was completely shocked at what had happened and obviously both mine and my brother’s cars are now a write-off.

‘‘It was unbelievable that so much damage could have been caused by one car.”

Feckenham crash involving Councillor Peter Whittaker

Police were called and it is understood they attempted but failed to breathalyse Mr Whittaker at the scene.

A West Mercia Police spokesman said: “West Mercia Police can confirm a man was arrested on suspicion of being unfit to drive through drink or drugs following a collision in Droitwich Road, Feckenham, Redditch, on 20 November.

“He was subsequently charged with failing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis, and is due to appear before Redditch magistrates on 13 December.”

Mr Whittaker has been a local councillor for the Tardebigge ward since May 1999 and was re-elected by a landslide in the last local elections.

He is also a member of the Tutnall and Cobley Parish Council, according to Bromsgrove District Council’s register of interests. He describes himself as a ‘self-employed farmer’ and ‘occasional HGV driver and PCV driver’.

The politician also lists himself as a season ticket holder at Worcester Warriors Rugby Club.

A Bromsgrove District Council spokesperson said: ”This is a private matter and it is not for the council to comment.”
